Avahi is an implementation of the Multicast DNS and DNS Service Discovery (mDNS/DNS-SD) specifications for Zeroconf computing. This means that you can plug your machine into a network and instantly be able to view other people whom you can chat with, find printers to print to, or find files being shared. This kind of technology is already found in MacOS X (also known as Rendezvous, Bonjour, and Zeroconf). It is based on the discontinued flexmdns project.
